Mission to South Africa
News from Grace Place 30 November 2013

Marilyn continues in the ministry in which she became involved in 2001 – that of sharing the gospel and a substantial meal with around 500 children in Leseding, the township near her of about 70,000 with approximately 70 per cent unemployment. This began as a ‘soup kitchen’ in which we actually served soup. But when summer came and it was too hot for soup, the menu was changed to peanut butter and jam sandwiches and fresh milk. Lethabo Kid’s Club is where the children know they will hear God’s message, sing praises, and have a substantial meal. You should see them running to get there!

The youth are a special part of her weekly ministry. God is at work in their lives, and many are developing into leaders in His work.

Hospitality has always been a major part of Cook’s ministry and Marilyn continues to host the youth, visiting missionaries, others who have come to help her and work in the ministry. For this, Grace Place, her home is ideal in providing a quiet place to draw near to the Lord and experience His beautiful creation.

Dear Ones, This has been a month of events! I guess the biggest event, at least for me and 1000 children was the T’shirt Day in which each child received a t’shirt. The local Academy helped us raise shirts for the 3-6 year olds. While these did not have the printing on them, they were in many bright colors and everyone loved them! The older kids – 800 of them – received shirts that said Lethabo Kids Club on the front and “Jesus (heart) Me” on the back. These were all in bright colors and it looked so good to see the children all dressed in their shirts, praising the Lord and responding to the story of Jesus Birth taught by Godfrey Lebese. This past week’s event was the Christmas Play organized and performed by the children and the youth – all of them speaking perfect English nice and loud. I’m so proud of what they did. On this day we had 2000 children! We had to run the children through at 600 per time. Because of the large numbers, they only got half sandwiches. This next week we should be back to our normal crowd of about 800. Another event this month was our family’s annual Thanksgiving/birthday/anniversary Day last Saturday. Because Thanksgiving is not a holiday in South Africa my grandchildren don’t get a day off from school nor do the adults get time off. We were at Cathie and Richard’s (my middle daughter) and it was their 30th Wedding Anniversary this past week! Well done, C & R! The birthday was my 77th on the 18th! For our Thanksgiving time, Richard led us in the Lord’s Supper with Kyle reading appropriate scriptures, and then Richard preached a short sermon. As several of Rachel’s school friends were there, it was a great witness to them as well. And then, of course, we had yummy traditional food and definitely overate! This Thursday, Megan and I were home alone and only later in the day she said something about it being Thanksgiving. I hadn’t even thought about making a special meal for the two of us! I felt so bad as it was her first Thanksgiving away from her family. Another big accomplishment this month was the veranda which has been added to the new church building in Leseding. Kyle drew up the plans for it and oversaw the building of it along with Carlos da Silva, one of the men from the church and about 15 of the youth. It was a great day of working together and the result is wonderful – a shady place from which to serve the children their food. But all of this pales into insignificance compared to the event we celebrate this time of year – the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ! God, the Father, celebrated with choirs of angels, a new star in the sky to guide the Wisemen, shepherds and wisemen falling down before the newborn child in worship and adoration! LET US KEEP OUR MINDS AND HEARTS CENTRED ON JESUS OUR LORD, OUR SAVIOR, OUR MASTER! COME, LET US ADORE HIM! In love, Marilyn
